Consistance. Don't curve your strokes as color, keep one solid rhythmic direction.
Example: Let's say you're coloring in Catwoman's boots. Now of course, like any normal human her legs are pipe straight, they're curved and rounded. Your coloring however should not be. Keep it straight. Pick one direction, if you start coloring at a right angle, keep coloring at a right angle. By doing so your colors will stay smoother and flow easer without as much inconsistency and shifting of direction.
Color direction shifts can draw attention to areas of the character that you don't want attention drawn to, and can lead to your audience noticing minor flaws in the character that might other wise go unnoticed.

And I know exactly what you mean, I used to think coloring along the curve of a characters body would give it more depth but it turns out to just make it look kinna messy.
